I will introduce an approach for analyzing and constructing explicit topological fault-tolerant circuits, by relating them to imaginary-time path integrals representing topological phases. This approach unifies different microscopic protocols for topological quantum computation such as the stabilizer toric code, measurement-based protocols, or Floquet codes. It also allows us to construct many new examples of such fault-tolerant circuits. Further, it makes it possible to construct explicit topological fault-tolerant circuits beyond the Pauli stabilizer/Clifford framework and beyond the toric-code phase. In particular, we construct such circuits for all abelian topological phases as well as selected non-abelian examples. The approach thus makes it possible to simulate exotic topological phases.
