To outperform modern classical methods, quantum devices must operate on large-scale quantum physical systems that maintain coherence through quantum error correction. Recent efforts have been devoted to the development of physical systems that are capable of reversing the effects of errors by themselves. We analyze Markovian autonomous decoders, which can be implemented with a wide range of qubit and bosonic error-correcting codes, and derive several upper and lower bounds on the logical error rate in terms of correction and noise rates. These bounds are useful to determine the criteria for scalable autonomous quantum memories.
